Bass Museum of Art
2121 Park Avenue
Miami Beach, FL 33139
www.bassmuseum.org
The Bass Museum of Art was established by agreement in 1963 when the City of Miami Beach accepted the gift of the art collection of John and Johanna Bass upon condition that it would maintain the collection in perpetuity, provide for the exhibition of the collections, and keep it open and available to the public. The museum occupies what was originally the Miami Beach Public Library and Art Center, which was designed in 1930 by Russell Pancoast, grandson of Miami Beach pioneer John A. Collins. This was Miami's first public building with an exhibition space for the fine arts, and it was designed to preserve the symmetry of the formal gardens of Collins Park, which had been donated to the City by Collins and laid out in the 1920s. This building is now the centerpiece of the city's historic district and was placed on the National Register in 1978.
Miami City Ballet
2200 Liberty Avenue
Miami Beach, FL 33139
www.miamicityballet.org
It was in 1985 that a leading Miami arts advocate, Toby Lerner Ansin, invited Edward Villella to consult with her and several associates about founding a classical ballet company in southern Florida. A year later, the Miami City Ballet nineteen dancers strong - gave its first performance, leading off with George Balanchine's Allegro Brillante. And, indeed, Balanchine - for whom Villella had danced for eighteen years at the New York City Ballet, and on whom Balanchine created a series of brilliant roles - would be the foundation of both the company's repertory and its style. Miami City Ballet has the largest Balanchine repertory in the world after NYCB. But over the years, the repertory has expanded to include almost all the major choreographers of our time - Jerome Robbins, Twyla Tharp, Paul Taylor, Frederick Ashton, Antony Tudor, Christopher Wheeldon - and it has triumphed as well in a number of the great 19th century classics: Giselle, Coppélia, Don Quixote, "Aurora's Wedding". Today, with its fifty-plus dancers from all over the world as well as from the company's own school, Miami City Ballet has won a tremendous national and international reputation - and in under twenty-five years!
Miami City Ballet performs in the Tri-County South Florida area: in Broward at Broward Center For Performing Arts, in Miami-Dade at Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts as well as at its studio theater in the Collins Park Neighborhood, and in Palm Beach at Kravis Center For The Performing Arts. Miami City Ballet is presented as the resident ballet company at the Naples Philharmonic Center in Naples, Florida. The Company also tours nationally and internationally.
Miami City Ballet School, recognized as one of the top dance schools in the nation, accepts students from beginner level through pre-professional level. The School runs all year round, with a Winter Program from September to mid-June, and a Summer Program from the end of June through the end of July. Classes are held at Miami City Ballet's 63,000 square-foot state-of-the-art studios in Miami Beach's Collins Park Neighborhood. Founded in 1993 by Linda Villella, MCBS operates on the premise that ballet training can provide long-term, life-enriching benefits to young people, and therefore serves talented students, regardless of their income.
