Carolyn Klepser

Carolyn Klepser has been fond of Miami Beach since childhood vacations here in the 1950s, and has been a renter in this neighborhood since 1994. A graduate of Beloit College (Wisc.) and New York Medical College, she is a semi-retired RN who served in the Peace Corps twice.

Since moving here she has devoted herself to local history, as a tour guide and former Board member of the Miami Design Preservation League, and as a free-lance historic researcher. In 2001 her research for the City of Miami Beach was instrumental in the designation of the Collins Waterfront Historic District, which includes this neighborhood. In 2002 she co-authored the book Miami Then and Now with Arva Moore Parks.

She is a docent at the Wolfsonian/FIU, a member of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of South Florida, and a founding member of both the Miami Beach Historical Association and the Miami Beach Democratic Club, as well as one of the founders of the Collins Park Neighborhood Association.

A fan of the 1930s, Ms. Klepser does not use email and has never owned a car. She advocates New Urbanism, historic preservation, public transportation, and affordable housing. She loves this neighborhood for its tropical beauty, rich history, livability, and cultural facilities, and she thinks tourists make life more interesting.
